BUILDING RESILIENCE IN YOUTH

Resilience can be defined as the capacity to spring back, rebound, successfully adapt in the face of change and adversity, and to progress socially, academically, vocationally and spiritually.

FAMILY, SCHOOL & COMMUN1TY CHALLENGE

  • What more can we do to help young people succeed now and in the future?
  • What more can we do to help prevent delinquency, violence, and substance abuse?
  • How can we better promote community and school resources to enhance utilization?
  • What additional resources do we need to fully develop the potential of all our young people
  • As an individual, business, organization or group, what role can we play? Some options?
  • How can we develop neighborhood groups to support all kids?

AN EFFECTIVE APPROACH

  • A concept developed and tested by the Search Institute in Minneapolis, MN.
  • Healthy Communities – Healthy Youth has helped more than 500 communities.
  • A building-block approach to helping young people grow up to be healthy, caring and responsible adults.
  • Involves 20 community assets to strengthen, and 20 individual youth assets to develop.
  • The more assets youth accrue the more they thrive, which also reduces high-risk behavior.

COMMUNITY ASSETS TO DEVELOP YOUTH

  1. SUPPORT – Teens need to experience support, caring and love from their families and many others. They need organizations and institutions that are positive and supportive.
  2. EMPOWERMENT – Teens need to be valued by their community and have opportunities to contribute to others and to make a difference. For this to occur, they must be safe and feel secure.
  3. BOUNDARIES & EXPECTATIONS – Young people need to know what is expected of them and whether activities and behaviors are "in-bounds" or "out-of-bounds"
  4. CONSTRUCTIVE USE OF TIME – Youth need constructive, enriching opportunities for growth through creative activities, programs, religious involvement, and quality time at home.

INDIVIDUAL / YOUTH ASSETS TO BE DEVELOPED

  1. COMMITMENT TO LEARNING — Youth need to develop a lifelong commitment to education and learning.
  2. POSITIVE VALUES — Young people need to develop strong values that guide their choices.
  3. SOCIAL COMPETENCIES — Teens need skills and competencies that equip them to make positive choices, to build relationships, and to succeed in life.
  4. POSITIVE IDENTITY — Young people need to develop a strong sense of who they are, and of their own power, purpose, worth, and promise.
